We’re transforming some of Adelaide’s favourite small streets and laneways and we’re excited for you to be a part of it.
Some of Adelaide’s best kept secrets are in the spaces that thread between its city blocks. That’s why the Government of South Australia and the City of Adelaide are working together to bring new life to the network of small streets and laneways that link the Adelaide Central Market to the Adelaide Riverbank.
The Market to Riverbank link is a significant route for more than 15,000 locals and tourists on a daily basis, and we want it to be a destination in its own right.
In the coming year, you will see a range of enhancements designed to make your laneway experience enjoyable and memorable. The Market to Riverbank link will feature upgraded intersections, new paving, lighting trees and landscaping, street furniture, public art and a program of activation.
Importantly, the $14.6 million upgrade will encourage more people to visit and invest in our CBD, enabling new ventures to spring up, boosting the nighttime economy and creating jobs.
How do you like your laneways?
In 2015, the feedback of businesses, property owners, city residents, students and others was captured to form a vision for redeveloping Topham Mall, Bentham Street and Pitt Street, as outlined in the Invigorate Your Senses place plan.
Then in April 2016 we asked businesses, building owners and the general community, ‘how do you like your laneways?’
These activities, along with engagement undertaken on Bank and Leigh Streets, plus a creative sector forum, were used to create the following vision for the streets and laneways that make up the Market to Riverbank link. The Market to Riverbank upgrade will incorporate these themes and ideas into its designs.
Anchored by the Adelaide Riverbank and the northern gateway into the market to Riverbank link, Bank Street is recognised for its casual eateries and gritty urban culture.
A local Adelaide institution with sophisticated alfresco dining and fashional small bars, Leigh Street’s beautifully restored buildings are a feature of this pedestrian laneway.
The heart of the Market to Riverbank link, Topham Mall is an eclectic food and retail hub lined with murals and a vibrant lighting installation, and a place where people can stop and recharge on their walking or cycling journey.
A people-friendly small street, Bentham provides a seamless walking trail with hidden green urban spaces and fun activities.
The Central Market atmosphere of celebration overflows into Pitt Street; as the entrance to the Market to Riverbank link it’s where culture, music and people from all walks of life flow from the inside out.
How can you be involved?
Engagement and communication with stakeholders and the community will continue throughout the construction program.
If you have an idea for transforming the Market to Riverbank link, we’d love to hear it. Please contact us to discuss your ideas or visit the Your Say website to provide feedback.
